About the Clay Artists

Misha Farhoumand is a DC-based ceramic artist whose sculptural vessels are shaped by an ongoing dialogue between traditional techniques and intuitive process. She works primarily with coils— a handbuilding method practiced for millennia— that encourages a slow, rhythmic pace. Each coil is laid with care— slow, repetitive movements, allowing each vessel to emerge as a reflection of time, patience, and presence. Often organic in shape and finished in muted tones, her vessels reflect a focus on restraint, material honesty, and the natural world around us.

Originally from Finland, Marja Pönkkä-Carpenter came to the US and studied Art Education in DC. A former teacher with Filmore Arts Center, and member of the Washington Sculpture Group, Marja has shown her work around the DMV since the 1990s. The series on display, originally titled “Priest and Disciples,” utilizes the ancient amphora shape as a metaphor for our bodies as “containers,” vessels of spirit; each with a unique story that speaks to the human experience and all our bodies hold.
